Kuttedo

© 2010 Steve Stanley ...as they pass through the cities gate, Kuttedo's dragon, Takki, looks to her for approval. In the distance, Semshi begins to glow, ablaze for atrocities against her Emperor, Chao Shin. Now, as Kuttedo and Takki concentrate on moving further east, to Moghan, to render similar judgment, Kuttedo considers the decree inscribed on her sword: "No Kingdoms Outside My Own - Emperor Shin". This work inspired by wife's passion for the Oriental culture and it's offerings. **Medium Used: variant sizes and opacities of the Detail and Soft Airbrushes. The layering process includes a special texture layer for the stone effect on the arch gate. Soft blender and a light opacity oil brushes were used throughout to get the rolling smoke effects. This was my first use of the "Surface Control" tool for the "lighting" effect. The elevation, spread, brightness and exposures were tweaked and subtly adjusted in the "cool globe" setting to get the final results. Over 120 hours were spent from concept to finish on this project over a period of 30 days.

Really well done, I like the movement here. As for Spectrum 16 - I didn't submit any of my works to any of Spectrum issues so if you saw my work posted there could you please give me a link??

Posted 7 months ago

Hobie says:

...hey ya Nakatoni. Appreciate your visit and comments. Far as Spectrum 16, was just wondering if that is where I had seen the "butterfly" piece. I look at so many sources for idea's, I most likely mis-quoted my source. My apologies. That said, it doesn't take away from the impressiveness of your works, and wherever you are on display, I will enjoy it.

Hobie says:

...thank you also Dave. I've been working hard on putting "story" into my work, rather than just another "pretty face". I especially appreciate your feedback, as you are a "story teller" with in your profession. Feedback is always helpful.

Posted 7 months ago

Hobie says:

...yeah Jason, best term for it is "Freelance". And you're not being nosy. :) My work hasn't hit the level I've hoped for yet. But I perservere with hope too. So far, mainly portrait work. I've done web layout idea's for entrepeneurs who own their own companies dealing with anything from Avon - Car Loans. Other past credits have included Hallmark and some published works through Disney's Cast Publication "Eye's and Ears". Appreciate the curiosity and if I can be of help, if it's in my means, I will, let me know..thanks Again Jason.

...well, Andre, it's my pleasure. I've been so weighted down by work, I'm stifled and slow getting any new work posted. Figure I'll just watch and learn from some of the best, for now. Thanks for the inspiration.

lensman says:

I haven't been on this site long and I don't know how much criticism people are looking for... that being said I think this is a fantastic painting with a minor caveat: I feel that the woman's forearms are way too long. From the inside of our elbows to our wrists is about the same size as our feet - which in this case would give her huge feet. But, take that with a grain of salt... she is a thin character... and once again an excellent painting.

Posted 6 months ago

Hobie says:

...lensman. Your feedback is very open and honest, not to mention welcome. First, thank you for it. Second, the model was exceptionally thin and long, which is one of the features which attracted me about her. Your assessment of measurement is correct. I would ask you to consider the dimensions are also slightly askew, due to the shortening of her length with the ground fog and smoke. It is a fantasy work also, and a bit of creative exaggeration is in place to accentuate the characters long reach on behalf of her king. ;) Thanks again for your boldness. It was a very refreshing perspective.

barn raven says:

Great picture, love the composition and the detail in the sword.

Posted 6 months ago

Hobie says:

...hi ya Raven. Good to have your comments and visit. I'm especially fond of this piece, and one of the reasons is the sword. Long story short, metal is tough to imitate on canvas for me, so this was a big step forward. And the inscription added the right touch to the story element.

Teresa Ascone says:

Wonderfully rich yet subtle colors. The detail and lighting are amazing. PHotoshop? I have Photoshop CS3 and I'm working up to upgrading since I just got a new Mac.

Posted 3 months ago

Hobie says:

...in an immense and heartfelt expression of gratitude Teresa, thanks. (boy is that redundant), anyway. Actually, I am someone who really respects those who can master Photoshop. I only use the Elements program to "enhance" certain aspects of the levels of work, as the progress in the needed stages. I've held fast to Corel X for all of my work, so far. I've worked with Painter 11, yet, upgrades are really lacking in the software, at this point, to match the quality of work available in it's predecessor. Either way, if there is anything I can offer to help suggest in your growth digitally, don't hesitate to ask. The worst I can say is that I don't know and make a suggestion on where to turn.
